About this equipment

March 17, 2022
Dredging Corporation of India (DCI) today signed a historic shipbuilding agreement for the first Make in India Project - construction of a Beagle Series 12 trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) at Cochin Shipyard.

December 6, 2022
IHC Dredging and Cochin Shipyard have signed an agreement for a design and engineering, hardware and support package for the licensed construction of a Beagle 12 trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD).
The new TSHD will be built by Cochin Shipyard for the Dredging Corporation of India (DCI). With the construction of this Beagle 12, a high-capacity dredger (12,000 m3), DCI will expand their fleet of trailing suction hopper dredgers.

August 13, 2024
The new trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) - currently under construction at Cochin Shipyard for Dredging Corporation of India (DCI) - is expected to be delivered by September 2025, reports The Hindu Business Line.

September 14, 2024
Cochin Shipyard Limited, together with India's Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, in presence of Royal IHC officials, laid keel for the largest dredger built in India yesterday - IHC Beagle 12.000m3 trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD).

Cochin Shipyard is set to deliver a new Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger (TSHD) with a 12,000 cubic meter capacity to Dredging Corporation of India (DCI) by September 2025, according to Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal. This dredger, the first of its kind from the Beagle Series 12 under the Atma Nirbhar Bharat Scheme, marks a significant milestone in the initiative to incorporate advanced global technology into Indian maritime operations.

The ?950 crore (approx 100 million USD) dredger will play a crucial role in maintaining port channels and represents a shift from previously imported dredgers. The new vessel will be built on the globally recognized Beagle Platform from IHC Holland, tailored to meet specific Indian requirements. Cochin Shipyard has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IHC Holland B.V. for technology and design collaboration on these high-capacity, complex dredgers.

In response to a question from MP Kalanidhi Veeraswamy about DCI's competitive edge, Minister Sonowal detailed that DCI operates a fleet comprising 10 Trailing Suction Hopper Dredgers with a total hopper capacity of 59,513 cubic meters, along with two Cutter Suction Dredgers, one Backhoe Dredger, and other ancillary vessels. DCI holds a significant share in India's maintenance dredging market and is actively involved in bidding for dredging contracts.

19 may 2025
CSL is likely to launch the vessel on July 20.

The keel of the dredger - built in collaboration with Royal IHC - was laid in September 2024. Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and H.E. Ms Marisa Gerards, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to India attended the ceremony.

According to DCI, the construction of this high-capacity dredger is set to enhance India's dredging capabilities, supporting the growth of coastal and inland shipping market.

Once commissioned, this new TSHD will be the most sophisticated and technologically advanced dredger ever constructed in India.

Also, the 127m long dredger will be built under the Beagle platform of Royal IHC.
