Shipowner H.C. Christensen established a wooden shipyard in Marstal in 1869 (some sources have 1855 as the founding year). He had founded his shipping company on 1842-11-27, which became a limited liability company in 1919. They managed to build 23 wooden ships before the shipyard converted to steel in 1914.
Shipping company and shipyard were run together until 1920, when the shipyard was separated into its own limited liability company.
In 1927, the H.C. Christensen shipyard took over the failed Marstal Staalskibsvaerft, which was then called Sondre Vaerft.
After the Second World War, the shipyard received good orders, but a serious deficit had to be taken when a shipload of steel sank in 1947 without insurance being underwritten for the value.
With some local support and guarantees from Marstal Municipality, H.C. Christensens Staalskibsvaerft af 1949 A/S was established two years later.
In April 1970, the shipyard closed temporarily while new capital was sought, which was found and just a month later production resumed under management supervision from Frederikshavn Vaerft. This solution did not last long either, and in August 1970, the shipyard was purchased by Thomas Schmidt A/S, and the shipyard was renamed Marstal Stalskibsvaerft og Maskinfabrik A/S.
