Hawks, Crawshay & Sons have sent out to India two dredgers of an entirely different principle. One of them is called "Hetty", and the name of the other is unknown.
They are built according to a design by M.Batho, which is quite different from the ordinary bucket ladder dredger. The dredging gear consists of two Bruce's patent excavators, (hence the name Batho and Bruce type dredger) each capable of containing 5 tonnes of dredged soil, being so constructed as to open in three sections and dig into the ground, and then to close and the grasp the load they are intended tor raise.
The whole of the motions as of opening and shutting are performed by hydraulic pressure.

Since having been sent to India, the HETTY has been at work, tot he greatest satisfaction.
The plan which has been found so successful, is likely to inaugurate a new era in dredging operations, not only in England, but throughout the world
