About this company

General information

The AmShip yard in Lorain OH started life as Cleveland Shipbuilding. It was founded in 1886 by Henry Coffinberry and Robert Wallace on the site of the Cuyahoga Steam Furnace Company, on the Cleveland waterfront. In 1897 they built a new shipyard in Lorain and relocated there, closing the Cleveland yard, but only two years later the company was acquired by The American Ship Building Company, eventually becoming their Lorain Division. It  closed in 1983.
