About this company

General information

The company was founded in 1903 as Amme and Riedmann, which operated the Delphin shipyard in Bremerhaven. In 1910, it was renamed Schiffbau-Gesellschaft Unterweser GmbH (Unterweser Shipbuilding Company Ltd.) and finally, on June 16, 1921, it became a public limited company (AG) of the same name. At that time, it was one of the most important shipyards in Northern Germany, particularly as a builder of fishing steamers. However, cargo steamers and special-purpose vessels were also built. Approximately 100 ships had already been delivered before World War I. The company survived World War I and the economic crisis, even though, for example, it did not build a single ship in 1932. After World War II, it initially focused on repairs and conversions.

It wasn't until 1950 that the company resumed building fishing steamers and special-purpose vessels. The successful models bore names like Sonne (Sun) and Nordland (Northland). In 1972, due to the German and international shipbuilding crisis, the company merged with Schichau GmbH (formerly Schichau shipyard in Elbing, Danzig and Königsberg) to form Schichau Unterweser AG, which merged with Seebeckwerft AG in 1988 to form Schichau Seebeckwerft AG.
