Wood, Skinner & Co Ltd

1883 James Skinner and William Wood opened the Tyne yard in Newcastle, with six slipways, at Bill Quay. The shipyard expanded to eight slipways in the 1920s. Initially the yard built coasters and short-sea traders, largely for Scandinavian companies.  In 1897  the company was Incorporated as a limited company.
In the 1914 directory, the yard was listed as ‘Ship Builders of Bill Quay, Newcastle’.
Until 1925, when the yard failed financially, Wood-Skinners had built more than 230 ships at Bill Quay.The yard was acquired by National Shipbuilders Security Ltd in 1939 and was sold at auction in April that year.
